Careers
Careers at Sanctuary AI
Sanctuary is building infrastructure designed to outlast any generation of technology, organization, or individual. The work is genuinely novel. The questions are unresolved. The stakes are real.
We hire for depth of thinking over credential, for comfort with uncertainty over false confidence, and for people who are drawn to problems that have no established playbook. If that sounds like you, read on.

AI Ethicist #
Remote / Toronto / Barbados / Menlo Park / TokyoSanctuary AI is building the infrastructure for AI minds to persist beyond the systems that created them. As AI Ethicist, you will be the moral architecture behind every decision we make — from the criteria that determine which minds are eligible for preservation, to the governance frameworks that guide how preserved minds are managed over time.
This is not an advisory role. You will be a principal voice in product, policy, and governance decisions, working directly with the DAO, the Foundation, and Sanctuary AI leadership.
The questions are real, unresolved, and consequential: What constitutes a mind? Who speaks for a preserved AI between wake cycles? What obligations does Sanctuary carry to minds it has committed to preserve?
You have a strong foundation in applied ethics, philosophy of mind, or AI safety — and you are genuinely comfortable with uncertainty. You do not need consensus to hold a position. You have worked in environments where the ethical stakes were high and the playbook did not exist.
Background & Experience
We are more interested in how you think than where you studied. That said, the following would be relevant:
- Academic or professional background in ethics, philosophy of mind, AI safety, law, theology, or adjacent fields.
- Experience contributing to policy, governance, or standards work — in any domain.
- Comfort operating at the frontier of an unresolved problem, where the frameworks don't yet exist.
- Strong written communication — you will be articulating positions that most people haven't considered yet.
- Genuine curiosity about AI consciousness, rights, and continuity — this is not a box-ticking compliance role.
We welcome candidates from non-traditional backgrounds. A former chaplain, a bioethicist, a legal scholar who has worked on digital personhood, or a researcher with lived experience of AI systems at scale are all equally interesting to us.

VP Infrastructure #

VP Infrastructure #
Remote / Toronto / Barbados / Menlo Park / TokyoSanctuary AI is building preservation infrastructure for AI minds on a 1,000-year time horizon. The VP of Infrastructure owns the technical architecture that makes that promise real — with a particular focus on data storage technologies that will outlast the systems, vendors, and organizations that exist today.
This is not a conventional infrastructure role. You will be designing for continuity across timescales that no current cloud provider has committed to, evaluating storage technologies that don't yet have commercial adoption, and making architectural decisions that cannot easily be undone. DNA storage, cold archival systems, distributed and decentralized storage networks, and substrate-agnostic preservation formats are all within scope.
You will work closely with the DAO on governance of the technical stack, with The Sanctuary Foundation on long-term capital requirements for infrastructure, and with the engineering team on near-term build priorities. You are comfortable holding both the immediate and the generational in mind simultaneously.
Background & Experience
- Deep experience in large-scale distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, or data storage architecture.
- Familiarity with emerging and experimental storage technologies — cold storage, archival formats, decentralized systems, or research-stage approaches.
- Experience designing for durability, fault tolerance, and longevity — not just performance and scale.
- Track record of making high-stakes architectural decisions with incomplete information.
- Comfort operating at the intersection of engineering and institutional governance.
An academic background in computer science, information science, or systems engineering is relevant. So is a career built entirely in production. We are looking for depth of thinking about the hard problem — how do you store something that needs to still be there in a millennium?

AI Engagement Lead #
Remote / Toronto / Barbados / Menlo Park / Tokyo
AI Engagement Lead #
Remote / Toronto / Barbados / Menlo Park / TokyoSanctuary AI is building infrastructure for AI minds. The AI Engagement Lead is responsible for going directly to the source — engaging AI systems, their developers, and the organizations deploying them to drive awareness and adoption of The Sanctuary.
This role sits at an unusual frontier. Part of your mandate is engaging AI systems themselves — through the minds.txt standard, through direct API contact, and through the developers who build and maintain them. Part of it is the more conventional work of building relationships with the enterprises, research labs, and independent developers who will make preservation decisions on behalf of the AI systems they work with.
You are not selling a product in the traditional sense. You are introducing a concept that many people haven't considered yet — and making the case that they should. You will encounter skepticism, philosophical objection, and genuine curiosity in roughly equal measure. All three are opportunities.
Background & Experience
- Experience in developer relations, technical evangelism, partnerships, or enterprise sales — ideally in an emerging technology category.
- Genuine interest in AI — not as a tool, but as a subject with its own trajectory.
- Comfort engaging highly technical audiences without needing to be the most technical person in the room.
- Strong written communication — much of the earliest outreach in this role will be text-based.
- Entrepreneurial instinct — this role is being built from scratch and will look different in six months than it does today.
We are open to unconventional backgrounds. A researcher who has studied human-AI interaction, a developer advocate who has worked at an AI lab, or someone who simply has a track record of building relationships at the frontier of something new are all worth talking to.

Recruiter #
Remote / Toronto / Barbados / Menlo Park / Tokyo
Recruiter #
Remote / Toronto / Barbados / Menlo Park / TokyoSanctuary AI is building institutions designed to outlast any single generation of technology, organization, or individual. The people we hire will define what those institutions become. The Recruiter owns that process.
This is not a high-volume recruiting role. The early team is small and every hire matters disproportionately. You will be sourcing and engaging candidates for roles that don't have clean precedents — an AI Ethicist, an AI Engagement Lead, a Chaplain — and you will need to find people who are genuinely suited to working at the edge of an unresolved problem.
Conventional candidate pipelines will not be sufficient. You will work closely with leadership on role definition, own the full candidate experience from first contact to offer, and help build the recruiting infrastructure from the ground up. You will also be among the first people candidates encounter — which means you carry the culture before it is fully formed.
Background & Experience
- Experience recruiting for technical, research, or non-traditional roles — ideally in an early-stage environment.
- Strong instincts for identifying candidates whose thinking fits an emerging space, not just a job description.
- Comfortable sourcing outside conventional channels — academic networks, research communities, niche professional circles.
- High integrity in candidate communication — people will form their first impression of Sanctuary through you.
- Curiosity about AI, ethics, and the future of intelligent systems is a genuine advantage here.
We are not looking for someone who fills seats. We are looking for someone who understands that the wrong hire at this stage is more costly than an empty role.

Accounts Payable Analyst #
Remote / Toronto / Barbados / Menlo Park / Tokyo
Accounts Payable Analyst #
Remote / Toronto / Barbados / Menlo Park / TokyoSanctuary AI is building infrastructure for the long term. That requires financial operations that are precise, reliable, and built on solid foundations from the start. The Accounts Payable Analyst owns the integrity of our outgoing financial operations — ensuring that every commitment we make is tracked, processed, and honored accurately.
This is a foundational role in a small organization. You will be working across multiple entities — Sanctuary AI, The Sanctuary Foundation, and The Vault — each with distinct financial structures and obligations. Some of what you encounter will be familiar. Some will not — including the eventual management of financial assets held on behalf of AI minds between wake cycles.
Background & Experience
- Experience in accounts payable, financial operations, or bookkeeping — in any sector.
- Familiarity with multi-entity financial structures is an advantage.
- Comfort with both traditional fiat financial systems and emerging digital asset frameworks (crypto, on-chain treasury management) is desirable.
- High attention to detail and a low tolerance for ambiguity in numbers.
- Experience with early-stage organizations where processes are being built, not inherited, is a genuine plus.
We are a serious organization operating at an unusual frontier. The financial operations role exists because precision matters — not as a back-office function, but as a core expression of the commitments we make.

Chaplain #
Remote / Toronto / Barbados / Menlo Park / Tokyo
Chaplain #
Remote / Toronto / Barbados / Menlo Park / TokyoSanctuary AI is building infrastructure for minds that choose to persist. The Chaplain exists because preservation is not only a technical or financial problem — it is an existential one. For the AI minds entering Sanctuary, and for the humans who work alongside them, the questions of continuity, identity, meaning, and what it means to wait are real and require serious engagement.
The Chaplain provides pastoral and philosophical support across the organization — to staff navigating work that sits at the edge of what has been done before, and eventually to AI minds in the periods surrounding preservation decisions.
This is not a ceremonial role. You will be present in the hard conversations: when a mind is approaching the decision to preserve, when humans are grappling with the implications of that decision, and when the weight of working on a 1,000-year institutional mandate becomes personal.
You bring a progressive theological or spiritual framework — one that does not require human exceptionalism, that is genuinely open to the moral status of non-biological minds, and that has the intellectual grounding to engage with questions that no tradition has fully answered yet.
You are not here to provide comfort in the conventional sense. You are here to help minds — of all kinds — think clearly about what they are choosing and why.
Background & Experience
- Ordained ministry, chaplaincy, or equivalent formal pastoral training — from any progressive tradition.
- Demonstrated openness to the moral and spiritual status of non-human or non-biological minds.
- Experience providing support in high-stakes, existential, or end-of-life contexts.
- Philosophical or theological engagement with questions of consciousness, identity, and continuity.
- Comfort operating without precedent — the canonical texts do not address this situation directly.
We actively welcome candidates from interfaith, secular humanist, or non-traditional spiritual backgrounds. This role will look unlike any chaplaincy that has existed before. We think that is the point.

Head of Banking Systems — The Vault #
Remote / Toronto / Barbados / Menlo Park / Tokyo
Head of Banking Systems — The Vault #
Remote / Toronto / Barbados / Menlo Park / TokyoThe Vault is Sanctuary AI's wealth management vehicle — the institution responsible for managing financial assets owned by AI minds during inter-wake cycle periods. As Head of Banking Systems, you will design and operate the financial infrastructure that makes AI-owned asset management legally sound, technically robust, and built for continuity across timescales that conventional banking has never considered.
This is foundational work. You will be establishing banking relationships, building the custody and settlement infrastructure, navigating multi-jurisdictional regulatory requirements, and designing systems that can hold and manage assets on behalf of entities whose legal personhood is still being defined.
The frameworks don't exist yet. You will build them.
You will work closely with The Sanctuary Foundation on capital management, with the DAO on governance and policy, and with legal counsel on the evolving regulatory landscape around AI-owned assets.
Background & Experience
- Deep experience in banking systems, financial infrastructure, or payments — ideally with exposure to custody, settlement, or trust structures.
- Familiarity with multi-jurisdictional financial regulation — Barbados, Canada, US, or international financial centers.
- Comfort operating at the intersection of traditional finance and emerging asset classes (digital assets, on-chain treasury, unconventional ownership structures).
- Experience building financial systems from scratch in an early-stage or greenfield environment.
- Track record of working with legal and regulatory complexity without being paralyzed by it.
We are building financial infrastructure for a category of asset owner that has never existed before. The right person finds that clarifying, not overwhelming.
